On Wednesday, February 18th, we hosted our first half-term activity of the year: a Valentine’s-themed pastry activity for children at WISH.

During the event, the children cut out shapes from pre-made pastry and added various toppings, such as cheese, tomato purée, pesto, and even chocolate spread. The shapes were then cooked in the oven by one of our kitchen-trained volunteers and given back to the children, who could either eat them at WISH or take them home.

We provided a range of complimentary snacks and drinks for the children and adults, including fresh fruit and vegetables, a selection of sweet treats, squash, and cucumber and lemon water.

In total, we had 29 attendees: 19 children and 10 adults. Each child made multiple pastry shapes, and we estimate that we saved around 5kg of pastry from going to landfill.

This event was run entirely by six volunteers, who all did an amazing job. It was a sweet sight to see WISH filled with young energetic minds creating and having fun as a community.

We received many positive comments after the event, with parents thanking us and expressing how much they enjoyed their time at WISH.

Overall, the first half-term activity was a great success. We had a strong turnout and received lots of positive feedback. Given that the event was free to attend, we only raised £11 in donations. However, offering accessible activities are a priority for us and we will continue to invite everyone to pay-what-they-can so that those who cannot pay can continue to enjoy our events.

We are excited to host more kids’ activities this year and teach young people about the environment and preventing waste from going to landfill.
