Last week we hopped straight into the Easter school holidays with some fun-filled children’s activities at WISH

On Tuesday 31st March we hosted flower-smashing card making, and on Wednesday 1st April we ran a seed-sowing session.

The activities were free to attend as at WISH we want parents to have the chance to take their children to activities during the holidays without the pressure of cost.

Both activities were designed to connect families with Nature, which is one of the four pillars that we are built on.

Across the two days we were supported by 7 fantastic volunteers, who gave up their time to assist with the activities. The flower-smashing was very popular, with 22 children attending. We don’t blame them, they got to make lots of noise and didn’t get told off for it!

This is an activity where you use real flowers and smash them onto white fabric with a heavy object. It releases the dyes from the flowers and leaves, creating a colourful watercolour effect.

The children love this, as it is noisy and creates something very beautiful. We had one child who was so happy with his card that he wanted his picture in front of WISH.The next day’s activity was seed sowing.

Children had the chance to pot their own seeds, which they could then take home and watch grow.

We had a selection of different seeds for them to choose from such as tomatoes, chilli, parsley, and sunflower seeds. We also had art supplies out so they could decorate their pots. It was great to see their creativity..

They loved this, as it was messy and they got something to take home that will hopefully grow into something they can harvest and eat.

With thanks to Climatarian Kitchen who put on a spread of complimentary snacks and drinks, including a range of fruit and vegetable platters.

The children loved making their own colourful fruit cups and, of course, enjoyed the sweet treats too.

We also had tea, coffee, and hot food available, which proved particularly popular with the adults.

Putting these events on helps us to support the community and to save items from landfill, with a total of 28.14kg of both food and non-food items saved and repurposed.

Overall, it was a fantastic two days. We saw so many happy faces and are glad that we could add to people’s Easter joy this school holiday. Our children’s activities are always a great success, and we can’t wait to offer more new activities. Keep your eyes peeled for what we have in store for the May school holidays!
