Tips for Cutting E-Waste During Your Spring Cleaning
In a March post, Our Collective Thoughts covered how spring cleaning is an opportunity to reduce consumption and participate in the circular economy. Doing so can greatly reduce your personal Carbon Cost and help cut emissions that contribute to climate change. Cutting e-waste during your spring cleaning is an important aspect of that process in our highly digital era.

E-Waste and the Circular Economy
As a recap, what does it mean to participate in the circular economy? In short, in a linear economy, we mine raw materials that we process into a product, and that product is thrown away after use. Instead, in a circular economy, we have closed material loops. Using those circular processes we ideally reduce how many new items we need, sometimes by purchasing other people’s used items. Then we repair or repurpose the items we already have to extend their use and we ultimately recycle those that have reached the end of their usable life. By extending the life of our items and reducing demand for new materials and manufacturing, we help reduce the Carbon Cost of our lives.
Consider that the estimated average carbon footprint of manufacturing a new laptop is 220kg of CO2e, which is roughly the same as driving 1,000 car miles! So extending your laptop life by keeping it in good condition, updated, and repaired when necessary, rather than buying a new one, or helping your old laptop to find a new user, are very significant ways to reduce its yearly Carbon Cost (source: Phys Org).
E-Waste is a Key Problem of Modern Life
E-waste piles up every year, not just in discarded laptops but also in mobile phones, computers, game consoles, household appliances, TV screens, and even lightbulbs. Each person globally produced 7.6kg of e-waste in 2021, but it was 24.5 kg in the UK, and only 30% of UK e-waste was properly collected (sources UNCC e-Learn; Global E-Waste Statitical Partnership).

Cutting electronic device waste is increasingly important, especially as items like laptops, game consoles, and handheld devices proliferate. Many electronic devices contain special minerals called rare earth materials, which are difficult to source and energy-intensive to mine. Recycling our devices or keeping them longer reduces the strain on this part of the supply chain and its contribution to greenhouse gases.
Six Tips for Cutting E-Waste
1. Extend the Life of Your Devices
- Regular Maintenance: To extend the lifespan of your devices, keep them clean and in good working order. Also, load the manufacturer’s software updates regularly to ensure they run efficiently and remain secure.
- Repairs: Instead of discarding a device at the first sign of trouble, consider repairing it. Many issues, such as a broken screen or a failing battery, can be fixed by local repair shops or mail-away services. With mobile phones, manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung have websites that will show you where you can get authorised service for your device. Meanwhile, IFixIt is an online community for learning about how to make repairs on your own. Legislators worldwide are pushing for “right to repair laws” to encourage manufacturers to facilitate repairs rather than the replacement of whole devices.
2. Buy Wisely
- Choose Durable Products and Buy Only What You Need: Opt for high-quality, durable electronics that are less likely to need frequent replacement. Avoid the temptation to buy the latest gadget unless you truly need it. Use your devices as long as possible before upgrading.
- Consider Repairability: Before purchasing, check if the device can be easily repaired and if spare parts are available.

3. Embrace the Second-Hand Market
- Buy Used: Consider purchasing refurbished or second-hand electronics. Especially when purchased from the manufacturer, these devices often work like new ones and are more affordable.
- Sell or Donate: If you’re upgrading, sell or donate your old device so someone else can use it. Ensure you wipe your personal data before doing so.
4. Recycle Properly
- E-Waste Recycling Centers and Take-Back Programs: Take your old electronics to certified e-waste recycling centres, where they can be properly disassembled, and valuable materials can be recovered and reused. Many electronics retailers offer take-back or trade-in programs, accepting old devices for recycling or credit towards a new purchase.
5. Use Devices Fully and Responsibly
- Maximise Use: Fully use your devices until the end of their life. For instance, an old smartphone can serve as a dedicated music player, GPS device, or alarm clock even when you aren’t connecting it to a mobile service provider.
- Eco-Friendly Disposal: If a device cannot be sold, donated, or recycled, dispose of it responsibly through a certified e-waste recycler to ensure it doesn’t end up in a landfill. Many manufacturers provide such services through their stores.
6. Support Sustainable Social and Political Practices
- Advocate for Right to Repair: Support legislation and initiatives that encourage manufacturers to make devices more repairable and less disposable. This is part of the Right to Repair movement. For instance, recent legislative efforts in the U.S. prodded Apple to change its policies to allow more repairs on the iPhone by third parties.
- Educate Others: To spread awareness, share the importance of reducing e-waste with friends, family, and community members.
- Digital Minimalism: Practise digital minimalism by questioning the necessity of each device and opting for multi-function devices where possible.
- Community Engagement: Organise or participate in e-waste collection drives in your community to ensure responsible disposal and recycling of electronics.
By adopting these practices, individuals can play a significant role in reducing e-waste and minimising the environmental impact of our digital lifestyles.
